Lady getting ready for a stroll

This painting is an example of a traditional “genre painting”. A style of painting, depicting scenes from ordinary life. The painting shows a scene of a lady dressing up and getting ready for a stroll on a Sunday afternoon. As she’s about to pick up her hat, a dove which probably her pet, broke free from its cage to interrupt her. Almost as if the bird wants to tag along with her. This symbolizes freedom which is also present to the lady who’s about to spend leisure and enjoy life.

Apart from the narrative scene, this painting was done to showcase the ability of the artist to paint variety of style from Still life, Animal, Landscape to Portraiture. This painting also painted in a style similar to that of 18-19th Century French Academicism which follows conventional rules and traditions in art.
